Backyard Patio & Fire Pit Transformation in West Orange

Project Investment: $37,000

Backyard Patio & Fire Pit Transformation in West Orange, NJ

This backyard renovation replaced an aging mix of asphalt, pavers, steps, retaining walls, and an existing fireplace with a more cohesive outdoor living space built around a new paver patio, improved access, a dedicated fire pit area, and integrated landscape lighting.

The project centered on creating a larger, more functional space for dining and gathering using Cambridge Ledgestone XL Smooth pavers, along with a new platform spanning both rear doors, bluestone steps, connecting pathways, retaining wall repairs, and carefully placed low-voltage lighting throughout the backyard.

The Challenge

The existing backyard had a mix of aging hardscape elements that no longer worked together as a comfortable, functional outdoor living space.

These were some of the problems with their landscape:

    • Existing asphalt and older paver areas that needed to be removed
    • Outdated steps and retaining wall sections requiring reconstruction or repair
    • An existing fireplace that occupied valuable backyard space
    • A patio layout that did not provide an ideal dining and gathering area
    • Disconnected transitions between the patio, yard, gate, and steps
    • A lack of integrated lighting around the outdoor living areas

The homeowners wanted a backyard with better flow, more usable gathering space, and hardscaping that felt cohesive from the rear doors through the patio and fire pit area.

Our Approach For This Project

We approached the project by rebuilding the backyard around a more functional hardscape layout, with dedicated areas for dining, gathering, and relaxing around the fire.

A major focus was proper construction beneath the new patio. The existing materials were removed and a deep compacted aggregate base was installed before setting the Cambridge Ledgestone XL Smooth pavers.

The new layout was designed to improve movement through the backyard, connecting the rear doors, main patio, fire pit area, bluestone steps, and gate while incorporating low-voltage lighting for better visibility and nighttime use.

    • 590 sq. ft. Cambridge Ledgestone XL Smooth paver patio with a contrasting 6x9 paver border
    • 5' x 17' raised platform spanning both rear doors with a step down to the patio
    • New bluestone steps connecting the patio area with the yard
    • Dedicated 14' diameter fire pit seating area with connecting flagstone pathways
    • Repair and reconstruction of the existing block retaining wall
    • Low-voltage landscape lighting with path and area lights plus Maple tree uplighting
